hey up lads.
Forgot to mention, the 'sleepless' is largely down to 7hrs time difference and an inability to stay asleep past 4am Pacific time.
Anyhows, out in the rain today. Our main aim was to hang out under freeways to avoid the rain, but it was quite noisy. On deviating slightly we spotted a curious sign on an old steam corporation building - 'fallout shelter'.
We followed the belly of a freeway to the city edge where the docks began and found a tiny section of publicly accessible shoreline from which to photograph the cranes. Also there was a lady in an orange jacket with an orange fleece blanket hiding a digicam. Cautiously she revealed to us she was a geurilla film maker making a movie about the evils of plastics and shooting a ship in the harbour!
Continuing on the underside expedition we found some newish concrete and an interesting take on stencil graffiti.
Next we headed into China Town and spotted some great weathered pieces of city, a smashed up sign and an amazing art-deco era garage still in full working order. Two blocks down another 'fallout' sign...
A freaky, but friendly, chap in a coffee shop said we should go check out the 'dome room' at the Arctic Hotel. We asked the clerk and he just sent us straight up to this over the top space. The coffee shop bloke, who had a tattoo of a cassette tape on his arm, described it as 'crazy pineapples on the roof'.
Not really exploration, but this female cop on a Segway was too good to be true! (Wo)man and machine as one!
A skip through Freeway Park, built over part of the freeway in a brutalist style. The orange window is onto the road itself and in the summer I think the concrete is actually a fountain.
And finally, happy days, another shelter.
Now we've had a look online for these and the only reference we can find is at
http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm...m&File_Id=3705, but this isn't the ones we've seen - it would be top to find out more - or get in...
