Arrow ARCHIVE: Excelsior Printing and Bookbinding Works, Manchester – May 2010 - 28-05-2010, 14:33

After walking past this place a while back and then someone suggesting we have a look at it, Myself and Rookie headed out to see what we could find.

After a sketchy entrance we wandered around the first few floors which had been vandalised, stripped of anything that could have been sold, Badly fire damaged in some areas and had obvious signs of recent use by squatters/the homeless.

One we had found the staircase we headed to the top floors which were in better condition but very similar to one another except for the office space on the 3rd floor. We also managed to get out onto the lower rooftop but unfortunately not the highest rooftop as o2 use this for one of their antennas and all accesses seemed blocked.

The Excelsior Printing and Bookbinding Works was originally opened on the Monday 4th July 1870 with Mr John Heywood owning the property. At the time the works could employ up to 750 people and was one of the largest of its kind.

History from this point is very scarce but in the late 80’s/early 90’s some of the site was used by Clare Tooling Systems. They have now left the site and many of their documents have been left in the building from producing milling, routing and other tooling machines & equipment.

A bit picture heavy but it provided many opportunities, I’m sure Rookie will have a few to add.

Thanks for Looking, Gone...
