Victoria Arches 24/4/11 & 26/4/11
Victoria Arches Visited with Blaze3689 and some 28DL members we bumped into With the entrance simple at the minute we didnt have too much trouble getting in but about 20 minutes into our visit we were met by voices and lights after contenplating running and almost soiling our selves when we realised some one was down there we decided to carry on and met some nice 28DL members who let us tag along with them dont want to bore everyone to much but the history nicked from Wiki: The Victoria Arches were a series of arches built in the embankment of the River Irwell in Manchester. They served as business premises, landing stages for Steam packet riverboats, and also as World War II air-raid shelters. They were accessed from wooden staircases which descended from Victoria Street. Regular flooding of the river resulted in the closure of the steam-packet services in the early 20th century, and the arches were used for general storage. In World War II the arches were converted for use as air raid shelters. The arches are now bricked up and inaccessible; the staircases were removed in the latter part of the 20th century. we are looking to go back because we think we might have missed a large chunk and our pictures took bladdered and on a phone so not the best so if anyones intrested just mail me http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/8146/img0295k.jpg http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/5369/img0291j.jpg http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/9386/img0285gr.jpg http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6633/img0248t.jpg http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/8150/img0244xx.jpg http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/5236/img0243vc.jpg http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/6741/img0240dl.jpg http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/2705/img0237nv.jpg http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/992/img0234tw.jpg http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/6124/img0228o.jpg http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/8690/img0226yq.jpg http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/1944/img0224yk.jpg http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/3772/img0213et.jpg SJ89 Blaze3689 |
